How to Use the Included Worksheet
The descriptive writing worksheet is helpful for students to break down the task of descriptive writing into manageable parts. It’s meant to be used it with any of the 80 prompts you choose.
Students write the topic, then draw a picture. Because good writers paint a picture for readers with words, this helps them reference their vision as they write.
They’re then prompted to use their five senses to include details, explain why it’s interesting, and something that’s important to share with the reader.
Last, they’re challenged (optionally) to include a simile, use an adverb, and/or replace a simple word with a more complex word.

Extension: Have students read their descriptions out loud to the class. It’s always striking to me how students will write completely different descriptions using the same prompt. Kids pick up on this too and it helps underscore the importance of adding details.
