📝 The Worksheets
Holiday Train CVC Word Mapping Worksheet
Deliver the gifts by creating words with the holiday train word mapping worksheet!
This resource engages multiple senses, because students build words using Elkonin boxes and magnet letters, then record the words on the writing lines.
Teachers can dictate the words using our CVC words list, or you can challenge them to come up with their own words.
Use our free Holiday Word Mapping worksheets for 4 and 5 phoneme words once your students have advanced past this!
Winter Roll, Read, and Color CVC Words
This roll, read, and color activity is really great for independent, multimodal practice reading CVC words. It’s more winter-themed than Christmas-specific, so I like to use it all winter long!
Kids roll the dice, find the matching column, and choose a word to read. Once they read it out loud, they color in the picture.
They’ll repeat this until they’ve read 30 words in total with all five middle short vowel sounds!
Decorate the CVC Christmas Tree (Medial Phoneme Substitution)
Time to deck the halls! With this worksheet, kids must create real words by filling in the missing middle vowel, completing an ornament on the tree with each word they make.
They have to try out different short vowel sounds between the two consonants to generate 15 real words in total.
While some of words have multiple correct possibilities, many have only one correct option. For example, h_m can be him, ham, or hum, but g_m can only be gum.
Light Up the Christmas Tree (Color by Short Vowel)
With this worksheet, kids “light up the tree” by reading and coloring the string of light based on the short vowel sound of each word.
Kids will read 45 words in total with all five short vowel sounds when they’re done. For an extra challenge, some of the words contain beginning blends.
Extension Activities
Rhyme: Choose a few words from the worksheets and have students come up with real or nonsense words that rhyme.
Comprehension: Turn the worksheet over. Choose two words from the worksheet and draw pictures to illustrate them.
Sentences: Have students turn the worksheets over. Choosing any two to three words from the worksheet, have students write silly sentences using those words.
