Why We Love It
This no-prep Roll & Write activity is engaging and targeted practice for young readers working on encoding (spelling) Magic e (VCe) words.
Like our Christmas CVC Worksheets, this activity incorporates holiday fun and excitement!
They follow a speech-to-print format. Kids look at the pictures and then spell the words on the corresponding recording sheet.
There are TWO free printable versions of this game for you! Both focus on the VCe syllable type and include all five long vowel sounds. But one board game includes Magic e words with beginning blends.
Board 1 – Magic E Words:
- cake, five, tube, hose, cane, tape, nine, rose, cave, cone, fire, game, robe, bone, cube, kite, home, rake.
Board 2 – Magic e Words with Blends:
- flute, globe, scale, smoke, plane, snake, stove, smile, plate, frame, slime, phone, shape, prune, slide, skate, spine, grade.
Recording Sheet
The recording sheet gives kids authentic encoding practice and holds kids accountable for completing their work. It also makes the teacher’s work easy as they check for understanding.
How to Play
This activity is easy to use and no-prep for teachers, while providing targeted spelling practice for magic e words! Just print, get a dice, and get started!
Kids follow simple steps to complete it, which makes it a great addition to your centers, partner games, small groups, and independent work.
To Play:
- Roll the dice, find the matching bear, and choose a picture.
- Say the word out loud, then write it on the recording sheet.
- Repeat until all 18 magic e words are written on the recording sheet.
👉 Vocabulary: Before beginning, quickly make sure kids understand the words connected to the pictures. For example, they need to know the picture represents the word “globe,” and not earth or world.
Extension Ideas
Fluency: After kids have recorded all the words, they can read the words aloud as they practice fluent word reading.
Rhyme: Rhyme is a foundational phonological awareness skill. After they encode each word, have students come up with real or nonsense words that rhymes, saying the rhyming word out loud.
Use it in sentences: Have students choose one picture from each bear and use it in a sentence, checking for spelling, spacing, and punctuation.
Scaffold practice: Use elkonin boxes! Remember, the final letter E does not get placed in a sound box …because it’s silent! Instead, students should write it in the same box as the final consonant. Better yet, kids can use our silent E sound box resource– specifically designed to include a line as a visual cue so kids remember to include the final silent E.
