Why We Love It

➡️ Goal Setting: The child is setting a goal, breaking into manageable parts, and achieving it. And while 100 minutes might seem to a child like an impossible goal, they can track their progress as they take small steps every day. This all helps to build confidence!

➡️ Good Habits: Establishing good reading habits early is so important! This assignment helps kids learn to prioritize setting aside a few minutes for reading every day.

➡️ Encourages Parent Participation: Research consistently shows that parents reading with young children leads to increased reading success later on. The practice is so important to helping children grow in their vocabulary knowledge, oral language skills, background knowledge, and increasing their overall comprehension!

➡️ Versatile: With the editable parent letter, this activity can easily be customized for any milestone, holiday, or time of year. I plan to use it with my students over winter break and AGAIN to celebrate 100 Days of School! Simply edit the parent instructions in Canva to suit your needs.

Using the Printables

Print the bookmarks, cut them out, and have kids write their names and color in the balloons!

You can customize the parent letter (using a free Canva educators account) to explain the procedure and goals of the assignment.

Attach it to the parent letter and choose a date to return it to school.

I try to choose a return date that’s already on parents’ radar, like the first day after break or the 100th day of school.

I like to incentivize my students to complete the bookmark and offer them something special, like bringing in any stuffed toy for the day, or picking a fidget from my box of class prizes.

I’ve even done tiers of rewards, because even if they don’t complete all 100 minutes, reading always equals success!
