This Halloween Read-and-Match activity is great for kids to practice decoding. Kids read the words and match them to the correct picture to complete the puzzle! Get both versions of the printables (CVC and Magic e) to make differentiation in your classroom easy!

This spooky activity is an engaging activity for kids to practice decoding! To complete the puzzle and reveal the message, kids must read words and match them to the correct picture.
There are TWO free versions of this resource for K-2 students: One for CVC words and one for Magic e words.
👉 Multi-Sensory & Engaging: This activity gets kids in the Halloween spirit, something they’re already excited about. Additionally, kids are cutting, reading, pasting, coloring, and matching. This leads to better engagement with the activity!
👉 Makes Differentiation Easy: One of the key principles of structured literacy instruction is that it is diagnostic, meaning it is individualized.
With this resource, we make it super simple. Everyone can be working on the same activity, but at different levels. If some students are still practicing CVC words, they use that puzzle. If they’ve moved on to practicing Magic e words, give them that puzzle.
👉 No Prep Required: Simply print and hand out scissors, glue, and crayons, and you’re ready to get started!
About the Worksheets
Each puzzle contains 12 words with mixed middle vowels.
To complete the puzzle correctly and reveal the complete picture, students must read all 12 words, cut out the squares, and match them to the correct picture.
Since all the puzzle pieces are the same shape, kids cannot rely on fitting pieces together. They must rely on their decoding skills.
Use the CVC words version for students practicing short vowels.
CVC Words: rat, nut, top, dad, hat, sit, cub, fin, sun, pet, ten, pot.
Magic e Words: kite, cube, mute, hose, rose, cane, tube, nine, fire, tape, bone, cave.
This worksheet for those working on long vowel sounds.
