Get 5 FREE Halloween CVC word Roll & Read printable game boards! This is a great activity for kindergarteners and first graders to practice decoding CVC words.
Why We Love It
Gamification is all about making lessons fun and increasing engagement. With these free printable games, kids have Halloween fun while decoding CVC words!
Kids roll the dice to navigate around the board, bringing the monsters to the candy stash, all while reading 27 different CVC words per board.
There’s one game board for each short vowel (5 in total). If kids play all five games, that’s exposure to a total of 135 CVC words!
This is targeted, intentional practice for important foundational literacy skills: identifying the beginning, middle, and final letter sounds in a word, blending them together, and reading the word fluently.
All kids will benefit from multiple, varied exposures and opportunities to practice and master these skills, but it’s critical for kids who struggle with reading or have dyslexia.
Teachers can offer lots of opportunities for exposures to CVC words. Download and print our FREE Decodable CVC Stories, CVC Picture Labeling, and CVC Puzzles printables!
How to Play
The rules are very simple, so kids can play fairly independently in groups of two.
Get two game pieces and place them at the starting line.
Taking turns, roll the dice and move your piece to the correct square. Next, read the word out loud. The players can check the other’s word to ensure correct pronunciation.
The first person to reach the finish line wins!
👉 For extended use, laminate the printed board games or insert them into plastic sleeves.

Extension Ideas
Get more out of every exercise! Add simple strategies to add more excitement to the game while kids practice other literacy skills.
- Accountability: After kids land on a space and read the word out loud, they write it on a recording sheet.
- Rhyme: After a player reads the word out loud, they need to say a word that rhymes (it can be a real or nonsense word).
- Comprehension: After a player reads a word out loud, they need to use the word in a sentence. If they don’t know the meaning of the word, they can ask the other player for help.
- More Decoding Practice: To make the game go on longer, require that kids reach the finish line, then turn around and work in reverse until they return to the start.
- More Practice: Use our Phonics Spider Web printables to keep the CVC word practice going!

Thanks for the cvc word practice. I just wanted to let you know on your cvc short e page, near the bottom, the word “fax” is used. My kids definitely noticed it before I did.
😉
Hi Jocelyn,
So sorry for the mistake. The resource has been updated, so please download the file again. Please give your students a big “thanks” from us! I love that they spotted the mistake. Keep up the great work, kids!

I downloaded the phonics board games but for some reason I cannot open to print – this hasn’t happened to me before. Is there any way you can email it to me or advise on what to do? Looks great – perfect for the kiddo’s I’m tutoring.
Hi Barb,
It’s strange that you aren’t able to download these when you haven’t had any issues in the past. We’ll follow up with an email to help support you so you can get the resources for your tutoring students.
