Teaching Info

Mastering word families helps students see common patterns and sounds in words.

But what are word families? They’re groups of words that look alike AND sound alike because they share the same vowel and ending sound.

So if a child can read –am, it opens the door to reading many words! They’ll be able to read ham, bam, Pam, and ram. Shortly after that, they’ll be able to read words like glam, cram, and champ!

Words in the -am word family can be a little tricky for young learners. That’s because the letter a doesn’t represent a true short a sound. It represents a nasalized (or whiny) a sound.

If you think about the vowel sounds in the words at and am, you’ll notice they are slightly different. That’s because a nasalized a sound occurs when a short a is followed by m, n, or ng.

And that’s why students will need extra practice working on -am word family words compared to other CVC word families.

The teacher should read each sentence out loud. Students must figure out which word from the word bank makes sense, then write it in to complete the sentences.

The sentences are:

  • I like to put jam on my toast.
  • I will have a ham sandwich for lunch.
  • A ram has big, strong horns.
  • Sam runs fast with his dog.
  • Pam wears a hat on her head.
  • A yam is like a sweet potato.

5. -Am Word Family Roll & Read

My students really liked this one! Get it FREE below!

Students roll a dice, then find the corresponding list of words. They choose a word from that list, read it out loud, and determine if it’s a real or nonsense word. They check off each word as they read it and circle the thumbs-up if it’s a real word or thumbs-down if it’s a nonsense word.

Nonsense words (or pseudowords) are important because they help a teacher determine if a skill is truly mastered because students can’t rely on memorization.

It’s also important because real, multisyllabic words are often made up of nonsense syllables. Think about the words “family” and “camera.” Children will eventually need to decode those words, which include a nonsense -am syllable.

6. -Am Word Scrambles

Get this free worksheet in the “Download & Print” section below!

Students must unscramble the letters to create a real word in the -am word family and write the word on the lines. The -am words are: jam, ham, yam, Pam, Sam, ram.

This activity helps kids to notice patterns in words, particularly words that are a part of the -am word family.

7. -Am or -An? Word Family Word Sorts

This worksheet is helpful because -an and -am sounds are easily confused! Download it below!

This worksheet works for kids learning about the nasalized short a sound in both -AN and -AM word families.

The lowercase letters m and n look very similar, so kids must use their visual discrimination skills to identify the differences. Then, they’ll hear the differences between words with the same vowel sound but different ending consonant sounds.
