What Is the FLOSS Rule?

The FLOSS rule is a spelling generalization for young learners:

➡ When a one-syllable word with a short vowel ends in the letter F, L, S, or Z, the last letter is doubled.

Examples: huff, bell, moss, and buzz are all examples of words following the FLOSS rule.

Students will need a lot of exposures and varied practice with the FLOSS rule. Read our article about teaching the FLOSS rule for more information and helpful teaching tips!

This is great activity for helping students identify the spelling pattern and decode words that follow the FLOSS rule.
  1. Introduce or Refresh: Go over the FLOSS spelling rule again before beginning.
  2. Identify the Pattern: Move to a word slide. Ask students to identify the FLOSS spelling pattern that they see. Click to reveal the placement of the FLOSS spelling pattern in the word. Ask students to decode the word.
  3. Reveal the Picture: Click again to reveal the picture. This helps confirm the meaning and pronunciation of the word.

For more advanced students: Move the slides into random order. This prevents students from predicting the ending pattern based on the previous slide and forces them to apply the FLOSS rule.

Extension Activities

Hide the Slide: After you’ve decoded a word, close out the screen and have students encode the word on paper.

Make a Sentence: Have students come up with a sentence using each word.

Rhyme: Come up with one real and one nonsense word that rhymes.
