Kids will practice an essential skill: identifying words that contain a specific speech sound. They’ll look at the pictures and color in any words that include the long /ē/ sound.

Important: Make sure to go over the words with them first, so that, for example, they know the word is “money,” and not “cash.”

Then, they’ll get to spell some common long E words, too. We made the sentences decodable, so kids should be able to read all the words included and write the word on the blank.

Two of the most common vowel teams are EE and EA. Kids must learn to read and spell words accurately with lots of repeated practice.

Tips for Success

  1. Spelling words with common vowel teams sometimes create homophones: like heal and heel. These can be very tricky, but kids need to know the difference when reading & spelling. Use our free homophone booklet to keep track!
  2. For tricky spellings, have kids come up with a memory hook to help them remember spellings. For example, “I eat meat.”
  3. If kids just aren’t sure how to spell a word, encourage them to use a dictionary to confirm their spelling choices.
