Long O Sound & Spelling
Long O Sound: The sound (or phoneme) of Long O is pronounced exactly like the letter name O. You’ll hear this sound in words like ocean, coat, and rainbow. The sound is represented like this: /ō/.
Long O Spellings: There are 5 ways to spell Long O. The most common spellings (or graphemes) are o, o-e, oa, ow, and oe.
Notes on Spellings:
- The grapheme o represents the vowel sound in an open syllable, like in the word no or open.
- The grapheme o-e means it follows the pattern of “o-consonant-e.” This means it’s a magic E or silent E word like home or smoke.
- The graphemes oa, ow, and ow are vowel teams (two letters that represent one sound), but we must note that ow can represent two different sounds! Learn more about the two sounds of OW.
Spelling the long O sound can be difficult for students to master because of the five different ways to spell the same /ō/ sound. Students need plenty of practice so they can learn which phonogram is used to spell specific words.

Long O Word Sort Worksheet
This worksheet helps students practice the spelling patterns for the Long O sound. Students should highlight the grapheme that spells the Long O sound before cutting, sorting, and pasting the words into the correct categories.
For an added challenge, encourage students to identify the syllable type for each word as they complete the activity!
Long O Listen & Spell Worksheet
With this listen and spell worksheet, students will develop an essential skill: identifying words that contain a specific speech sound.
They’ll examine the pictures and color in the ones that include the Long O sound. We highly recommend that teachers say the picture words aloud, and kids circle and color words with the Long O sound. This will avoid confusion with the vocabulary.
Next, they’ll practice spelling some common Long O words by filling in long O words within decodable sentences.
Long O Sound Sort Worksheet
This activity gives students valuable practice in isolating and identifying vowel sounds within words. Using their phonological awareness skills, students will analyze pictures and sort them into two categories: “Long O” and “Not Long O.”
To make it even more interactive, you can encourage students to say each word aloud before deciding where it belongs. This extra step helps reinforce their ability to recognize the Long O sound in spoken words.
Once the pictures are sorted, have a discussion about why certain words belong in each column—it’s a great way to deepen their understanding of vowel sounds!
Long O Spelling Choices Worksheet
Two common ways to spell the Long O sound in the middle of words is OA and O-E. Kids must learn to read and spell words accurately with lots of repeated practice.
This worksheet helps kids refine their spelling. They’ll choose the right spelling choice – o-e or oa – and color the pictures, too.
Teaching Tips for Success
Spelling words with long vowel graphemes can often lead to discussions on homophones, such as rose (the flower) and rows (in a line). These can be challenging, but it’s important for kids to learn the differences when reading and spelling.

⭐️ For tricky spellings, encourage kids to come up with memory hooks to make them easier to remember. For example, “I row the boat with my toe.”
