Using the Printables
These printable booklets are very low prep! Just print the pages and cut out the cards. For extended use, be sure to laminate them!
Optional: Punch holes in the top corners, place them on book rings, and you’re ready!
✅ Learning Objectives
- Identify and isolate beginning, medial, and ending phonemes.
- Blend sounds to decode CVC words.
- Strengthen phoneme-grapheme correspondence through tactile interaction.
📚 How to Use
- Introduce the Activity
Explain that each slider will help them “build” a word by blending sounds together as they slide their finger from left to right. - Isolate Sounds
Start by placing your finger on the green dot.- Say the first sound out loud, stretching the sound as you begin to slide your finger to the yellow dot. (e.g., c)
- Add the Vowel
Continue sliding you finger to the yellow dot, saying the vowel sound out loud and stretching it. (e.g., c-a) - Blend the Whole Word
Finally, slide your finger to the red dot, saying the final sound and blending it with the first two sounds. the full word (e.g., c-a-t). - Reinforce by Writing (optional)
Have the student write the full word on a whiteboard or in a notebook to reinforce phoneme-grapheme correspondence.
🔁 Differentiation & Extensions
Students who need more support: Model blending aloud before asking them to do it independently.
More advanced learners:
- Mix cards with different middle vowels. This challenges them to flex between different short vowel sounds.
- Encourage students to change one letter to make a new word (e.g., cat → hat).
Make it multi-sensory: Let students use a fun pointer to slide across the dotted line, or have them press little play-doh balls on each grapheme dot as they read each sound aloud.
