🪄 Why We Love It

For students practicing Silent e words, this spin-and-match decoding activity is engaging, multi-sensory decoding practice!

Students get targeted, cumulative practice with VCe (silent e) words. They spin the wheel, reading the words multiple times as they match the pictures to the words. That means multiple exposures as they read, re-read, and record their answers.

And why do teachers love it? It’s super low prep and easy to keep organized, plus it’s versatile and can be used as an engaging phonics center, task boxes, or for morning work.

Student Instructions:

  • Starting with picture #1, spin the circles and read the words until you find the word that matches the picture.
  • Optional: Underline or highlight the VCe pattern.
  • Write the word on the recording sheet.
  • Repeat for #2 – #8.

Tips & Info

Go over vocabulary. Students need to know the word is “cube” and not “square.” Go over each of the words. Have them listen for the long vowel sound.

Extension Activities

  • Sentences: Choose two words, then turn the page over and write a sentence for each word. This helps students connect words to meaning and get exposures to the word’s use in context.
  • Phoneme Substitution: Have students come up with new words by changing one phoneme (cube → tube, or bake → bike).
