Teaching Letter C
As teachers, we want to support students as they build foundational skills like letter formation, visual discrimination, and knowledge of the alphabetic principle.
Because it’s the most common letter c sound, students need to learn the hard c sound (/k/ like cat, car, or cup) first.
We don’t include the soft c sound (/s/ like city or cycle) when we first teach this to young learners.
Explicit instruction and multiple exposures to the letter c, including proper letter formation and phoneme-grapheme correspondences, will help students master letter c!
Teaching Progression:
- Introduce the letter name “C” and the common letter sound (/k/).
- Practice tracing and writing the uppercase and lowercase grapheme (C and c) using proper letter formation.
- Connect the letter to the sound. As the student traces or writes the letter, they should be saying, “C says /k/” out loud. Have students practice listening to words that contain the letter C, have students listen for the /k/ sound. Offer multiple, multi-sensory exposures to this with our worksheets below!
Important Info:
- The soft c sound (/s/ like in city) should be taught explicitly later on, after students have learned all individual letters, digraphs, and blends. Read our article about teaching soft c and get free soft c printables!
- Words that begin with c, but do not contain the true /k/ sound (such as those that begin with digraph ch) are not included. This would be confusing for students.
- Some beginning blends like cr or cl may be appropriate to introduce for young students because the /k/ sound can be clearly heard.

Letter C Writing: Students trace the uppercase or lowercase letter once per line, then write it multiple times, following the same letter formation path.
➡ Uppercase & Lowercase Identification

Letter Hunt (2): Use these fun “I Spy” style worksheets to have students practice identifying capital and lowercase c in isolation. One page is focused only on finding uppercase C’s among other uppercase letters, and the other is only lowercase c’s among other lowercase letters.
Letter C Puzzles: This is great multi-sensory practice for young learners! Kids color and cut out the pictures, saying the words out loud (cow, cat, cake, carrot, crayons, cup), listening for the /k/ sound.
Mix up the cards and have them match the pictures, bringing the uppercase and lowercase letters back together.
Uppercase & Lowercase Matching: Students must find the matching letter and draw a line connecting the uppercase and lowercase C’s.
Color the Letters: Students have to color the uppercase letters red and the lowercase letters green. To do this, they have to identify and distinguish the capital and lowercase letters from each other, which is especially difficult for letter C, because the only difference between the two is the size of the letter.
Decorate the Cupcake: This multi-sensory worksheet asks students to find the letter c (both capital and lowercase) hidden among other letters, cut them out, color them, and paste them on the cupcake!
The finished result is a beautiful, colorful letter c cupcake. The cupcake is a great way for young learners to connect the hard c sound (/k/) with the grapheme C.
➡ Picture Association (Beginning Sounds)

Letter C Picture Coloring: This is a fun “C is for…” worksheet! Students should color in the pictures, saying the “C is for” and the word out loud, listening for the hard c sound (/k/). The words are: clown, cat, cup, crayon, carrot, cow, car, cake.
