Teaching Letter D
As students build important, foundational skills like letter formation, visual discrimination, and knowledge of the alphabetic principle, these free letter d worksheets are a great resource to support them!
They allow for explicit instruction and multiple exposures to the letter d including proper letter formation and phoneme-grapheme correspondences.
➡ Start by introducing the /d/ sound. Practice the /d/ sound in isolation, listen for it in words, and use your sound wall to talk about articulation.
I like to use ASL as I teach each new sound using our embedded mnemonic Google Slides because connecting a physical sign improves memorization and recall.
➡ Connect the sound to the letter name. Connect the letter name, a keyword, and the sound by saying, “D, donut, /d/.”
Offer multiple, multi-sensory exposures to this with our worksheets below! Use our mnemonic alphabet resources to help students connect letters to sounds!
Try to stick with true /d/ sounds, but some beginning blends like dr may be appropriate to introduce for young students because the /d/ sound can be clearly heard.
➡ Practice tracing and writing the uppercase and lowercase grapheme (D and d) using proper letter formation and pathways.
As the student traces or writes the letter, they should be saying, “D says /d/” out loud.

➡ Letter Reversals: Lowercase d and lowercase b are called mirror letters. That’s because they look exactly the same, but reversed.
Tips for letter reversals: Use your sound wall. Teach d separately from b to help avoid confusion.
👉 Use the Letter Reversals bundle to help students overcome reversals!
Reversals are extremely common, and not a huge cause for concern in young learners. By connecting phonemes to graphemes, focusing on mouth articulation, and giving students plenty of practice with the individual letter, you can support your students well.

Letter D Writing: Students trace the uppercase or lowercase letter once per line, then write it multiple times, following the same letter formation path.
➡ Uppercase & Lowercase Practice

Letter Hunt (2): Use these fun “I Spy” style worksheets to have students practice identifying capital and lowercase d in isolation. One page is focused only on finding uppercase D’s among other uppercase letters, and the other is only lowercase d’s among other lowercase letters.
Letter D Puzzles: This is great multi-sensory practice for young learners! Kids color and cut out the pictures, saying the words out loud (dog, donut, dolphin, dinosaur, drop, and duck), listening for the /d/ sound.
Mix up the cards and have them match the pictures, bringing the uppercase and lowercase letters back together and saying the word out loud, listening for the /d/ sound.
Uppercase & Lowercase Matching: Students must find the matching letter and draw a line connecting the uppercase and lowercase D’s.
Color the Letters: Students have to color the uppercase letters red and the lowercase letters green. To do this, they have to identify and distinguish the capital and lowercase letters from each other.
Donuts for the Dog: This multi-sensory worksheet asks students to find the letter d donuts (both capital and lowercase), cut them out, and paste them in the dog’s bowl.
➡ Picture Association (Beginning Sounds)

Letter D Picture Coloring: This is a fun “D is for…” worksheet! Students should color in the pictures, saying the “D is for” and the word out loud, listening for the /d/ sound. The words are: dog, donut, door, duck, dinosaur, dolphin, drum.
Beginning Sounds Picture Match: Students must look at the three pictures, deciding which one begins with the /d/ sound. They draw a line from the letter d to the correct picture and color it in.
