Why We Love It 🎃
There are lots of reasons to love these morphology printables, but most of all, kids have fun while learning and practicing foundational skills in context.
📝 It Provides Meaningful Practice
Each worksheet covers various important skills, so students strengthen morphological awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and reading comprehension. They focus on common prefixes, suffixes, and Halloween-themed base words.
🥳 It’s Engaging
Kids (and teachers) love to celebrate holidays, especially the extra fun ones like Halloween. These worksheets might just be the ticket you need to help kids engage with meaningful content, without even realizing they’re doing so!
⏰ It’s No-Prep
In busy times of year, the best kinds of activities are the print-and-use ones! And these are just that.
☑️ What’s Included
2 Halloween Morphology Reading Passages

These worksheets feature two short stories called “Sam’s Halloween Costume” & “The Halloween Party.”
The passages are designed to give students repeated exposure to common prefixes and suffixes in meaningful sentences rather than asking students to study affixes in isolation.
Students identify target prefixes and suffixes in each passage then answer comprehension questions.
A bonus challenge encourages students to take their word analysis a step further by identifying words with multiple affixes and exploring different affix combinations.
How to Use
- Initial Read: Read through the passage from beginning to end. The focus for the first read is on decoding and understanding the story.
- Create a key: Students will color in the crayons to create a colored-coded key (use one color for prefixes and a different color for suffixes). Then, spend time reviewing the target prefixes and suffixes.
- Word Part Search: Students read the passage again, this time stopping at times to underline or highlight words that include the target prefixes and suffixes.
- Respond: Complete the comprehension and bonus questions.
- Discuss: Spend time talking about the the marked works and discuss the meanings. Some questions to ask include: What is the base word? What is the prefix/suffix? How does the affix work? Does it change the meaning? If so, how? Does it change the grammatical role? If so, how?
- Read Aloud: Read the passage again, focusing on oral fluency (accuracy, rate, and expression).
Halloween Word Matrix

This worksheet uses a word matrix format to help students build and apply new words. Kids combine prefixes, Halloween-themed base words, and suffixes to build words. Then, they put their knowledge into practice by choosing two of their newly built words and writing a sentence with them.
These activities are great because they reinforce decoding, word analysis, spelling, fluency, and written expression through meaningful practice.
How to Use
- Review the listed prefixes, base words, and suffixes.
- Teach or review how to use a word matrix.
- Combine word parts to construct new, real words. List them on the “Words” line.
- Have students choose two of their newly constructed words from the matrix and write a complete sentence at the bottom.
Note: Before using the word matrix worksheet, make sure kids are familiar with suffix spelling patterns.
For example, scare + ed = scared requires the dropping rule. un + wrap + ed = unwrapped requires the doubling rule. And candy + es = candies requires the changing rule.
